The aim of this research is to examine the leadership characteristics and problem-solving skills of health, culture, and sports managers working in universities. For
this purpose, the relational screening model was used in this study. The analysis was conducted on health, culture, and sports unit managers working in foundation
and state universities in Istanbul in the 2018–2019 academic year. The schools were determined by simple random sampling and questionnaires were distributed to
the administrators. Scale was applied to 60 people, although one questionnaire was considered invalid due to coding errors; hence, analysis was conducted on 59
people in total. After receiving the ethics committee approval, the research data were obtained by applying Ekvall and Arvonen’s personal information form and the
Leadership Scale for Sport with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.97 and Heppner and Peterson’s problem-solving inventory (PCI) with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient
of 0.88. The data were analyzed using SPSS 21 software, frequency, descriptive statistics, Mann–Whitney U test, and Kruskal–Wallis variance analysis method. As a
result of the data analysis, the change-oriented leadership scores were 0,05 according to the marital status parameter while the total leadership scores were 0,01; in
problem-solving characteristics, a significant difference was found at 0,05 level in relation to professional experience parameter and at 0,01 level with respect to income
level. Based on the findings, it was then concluded that marital status had a positive effect on leadership and problem-solving skills in professional experience.
