Investigating the Relationship between Somatotypes Structures and Strength Parameters of 12-14 Age Basketball Players with Shooting Performance

The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between somatotype structures and some strength parameters of male basketball players aged 12–14 years. A total of 43 players (age=13.08±0.86) voluntarily participated in the study. The body weight, height, circumference measurements (flexion of calf muscles and biceps), diameter measurements (humerus and femur), and skinfold thickness (triceps, subscapular, suprailiac, and medial calf) were measured. Somatotype values were determined by Heath-Carter somatotype method. Strength performance tests (back leg strength, vertical jump, anaerobic power, sit-up, shooting with health ball) were conducted on the players. A shooting test, which is part of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) fitness test, was used to determine the shot performance of the participants. Shot performance and strength parameters were determined by Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient. No relation was found between the shot performances of the participants and endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph values (p>0.05). Additionally, the findings revealed no relation between the shot performances of the basketball players and the anaerobic power, vertical jump, and back leg strength values (p>0.05). A weak positive relationship was determined between the shot performance of the basketball, sit-up test, and shooting with health ball (r=0.32; 0.37; p<0.05). As a result, it was ascertained that the increase in the strength values representing the power of the upper extremity and core region resulted in the increase in the shot performance scores.
