Effectiveness of the Awareness-Raising by Sport on Children with Special Needs

Aim: Participation in sporting activities that provide awareness-raising for children with special needs should determine the effect on the attitudes of university students. 

Methods: The universe of the research is made up of the students studying in 2014 – 2015 of the coaching education and sport management department of Istanbul Gedik University. The study employed data collection tool the “Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons Scale” .

Results: 69 males and 21 females with average age of 21,84 participated in the research. % 52 of participants are trained in coaching education and % 38 are trained in sport management. 35.6% of the participants stated that they did not participate in awareness-raising sportive activities for special needs individuals traditionally organized by Istanbul Gedik University and 64.4% participated in it. According to the statistical analysis of the statistics, it was determined that the attitude scores of the participants who apply to awareness applications are higher, although there is not a statistically significant difference (p=0,77) between those who participate in the awareness applications and those who do not.

Conclusion: As a result of the research, it was determined that the attitudes of the participants towards the special needs individuals are similar to the information in the literatüre. The results of the surveys, which are similar to those of the research, but on the holding effect of the participation to the awareness-raising activities by different kinds of informing activities, are shown to be significantly higher than those who do not participate in the awareness activities. As a result of this research, it was determined that attitude scores of participants in awareness applications were higher but there was no statistical difference between the groups.
