Photography as a Serious Leisure Activity: Segmentation of Photographers by Cluster Analysis

The main aim of this study was to classify types of photographers and to investigate the differences among the segmented groups based on serious leisure qualities. In this sense, questionnaires were used to collect data. Purposive sampling method was conducted and 280 photographers who are the members of Photography Art Association in Eskisehir were included in this study. To classify types of serious leisure photographers cluster analysis were adapted, to examine validity of the final cluster solution discriminant analysis was applied, and to identify the differences of the characteristics of segmented groups among different demographic and photography-related variables chi-square tests were used. According to results of the cluster analysis, serious leisure photographers classified into three different clusters, and they were named as “amateur photographers”, “hobbyist”, and “social photographers”. Amateur photographers were found that they reported the highest levels of serious leisure participation, participants who were taking photography as their hobby reported the moderate level of serious leisure participation, and social photographers had the least levels of serious leisure participation.
Amateurs were more satisfied with their serious leisure pursuit than hobbyist and social photographers. According to the results of chi-square tests, there were significant differences among the three segments with respect to their income level and marital status. As a conclusion, it can be claimed that the level of serious leisure participation to the photography is closely related with leisure satisfaction.
