The aim of this study is to review the relationship between the levels of physical activities of 12-14 ( =13,05+0,75year)yearoldchildrenandtheirnutritionalbehaviour.436volunteerstudents(222girlsand214 boys) from two public schools in Kartal and Maltepe districts in Istanbul participated in this study. To determine the levels of physical activity, the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children developed by Kowalski et al and the Physical Activity Survey for Children, adapted to the Turkish society by Sert and Temel (2014), were used. To determine the nutritional behavior, the nutritional behavior scale developed by Edmundson et al (1996) and the Nutritional Behaviour Scale adapted to the Turkish Children by Öztürk and Erdoğan (2010) were used.
In the statistical analysis, arithmetical averages ( ) and the standard deviation (SS) were determined, and the relationship between the averages were analyzed by using Pearson correlation coefficient. The level of significance was set at p<0.05.
The average score for physical activity was found as (26,12+6,74 points) for all children, which means an average active level. Considering the gender, the activity level was (25,57+6,94 point) for the girls and (26,68+6,49 point) for the boys. As for the nutritional behavior, all children scored 1,28+5,45, which means a moderate level, while girls scored (1,64+5,61 points) and the boys scored (0,91+5,28 points), both of which are again moderate levels. For all the children, a meaningful relationship was found between the level of physical activity and the nutritional behavior (p< 0,00). As for the gender specific scores, a meaningful relationship was found both for the girls (p< 0,00) and the boys (p< 0,01).
It can be said that as the level of physical activity increases, the children tend to eat healthier foods.
